Wu-Tang ClanメンバーのジーニアスGZAの過去作品を振り返ってみよう

来年50歳を迎えるGZAはライム(詩)を書くよりもチェスにより多くの時間を費やしたいと考えている。過去に数々の傑作を生み出したので、もう十分に仕事は果たしたということらしい。

GZAはWu-Tang Clanのデビュー・アルバム『36 Chambers』が世に出される以前に、すでにアルバムをリリースしたことがある唯一のメンバーである。常に時代を先取る姿は、彼につけられたニックネームの通り「ジーニアス(天才)」である。彼はビートに己の持つ知識をありのままにラップし、現代にあふれているラップ(時にODB(オール・ダーティーバスタード)のライムにも見ることができるが！)に見られるような「無知をさらす」などということは一切ない。

GZAは『36 Chambers』の製作において大きな役割を果たしたが、それだけでなく自身のソロアルバム『Liquid Swords』でも大きく成功し広く世に認知された。「完璧なるヒップ・ホップ・アルバム」と称される『Liquid Swords』は、カンフーのサンプリングと荒々しいラップとのコンビネーションという、ウータンのスタイルをより一層進めることとなった。他のメンバーが大暴れにするのと対照的に、GZAは常に知性派としての役割を果たしていた。
